Recorded in 2018, ASHFALL was inspired by the beauty of the Sky Trail at Point Reyes and the vulnerability of forested areas to the increased frequency and severity of wildfire due to human-caused climate change. In 2020, before ASHFALL was released, a dry lightening storm hit Point Reyes, igniting the Woodward fire during a historically hot and dry fire season. The fire burned through just under 5,000 acres of Point Reyes, including a large portion of the Sky Trail. ASHFALL album photography is from within the Sky Trail burn scar.

Human-caused climate change has been enabled by decades of hypercapitalism. Reactionary oligarchs in the capital class have funded entire networks of rightwing thinktanks, media, and pundits to push neoliberalism as a means to avoid meaningful climate change regulation. Decades of neoliberalism have gutted democratic institutions, destroyed unions, forced austerity, and caused radical economic inequality. And as the impacts of neoliberalism and hypercapitalism have threatened to undermine capitalism itself, reactionary oligarchs have increasingly relied on fascistic propaganda for deflection.

As the ongoing human-caused climate crisis unfolds, humanity faces the growing threat of a global neofascist and authoritarian movement. Reactionary oligarchs weaponize the climate crisis for fascistic propaganda. Climate refugees are otherized and framed as a threat to majority culture. Food and water insecurity are blamed on ”weak” leaders failing to secure resources. And any attempt to address climate inequity immediately invokes the fascistic “Cultural Marxism” conspiracy theory that is rooted in the Third Reich.

In the coming decades, humanity will see radical migration as the climate in entire regions of Earth becomes less and less hospitable to humans. Humanity will see increased resource competition as global breadbaskets fail due to aridification. And humanity will see more and more direct action against global capitalists from activist groups pushing desperately to preserve some semblance of a livable climate. All of this will occur as an ascendent fascistic and authoritarian movement increasingly calls for fascistic notions of “strength” and increasingly gains control of nuclear stockpiles.

But fascists never gain honest majorities. They are always outnumbered. So there is a clear way forward toward a better future: Solidarity.
